Interview with the Director - Yarno Rohling
Tell us a bit about yourself and your background in filmmaking
Hey there, I'm Yarno Rohling. I’m a Sydney-based emerging comedy filmmaker and screen actor. I'm an SFS graduate, which is where I had the pleasure of meeting Jack Willmott, co-creator, and co-star of Wild Night. I've been making short films and comedy sketches with my brother since childhood, and I've continued doing so into my 20s.
How did Wild Night first come together as a project?
Jack and I had just wrapped principal photography on a shoot, and I pitched him this weird sketch idea of the world’s lamest birthday party, and thankfully he liked it. We got together to figure out the story and how we wanted it to look, and shot it that evening.
To be honest, it's almost like watching a documentary or reality show. How tightly was the film scripted versus improv?
We had no script. There were a couple of bits that we’d come up with prior to shooting, but the final product is really just a 2-minute cut of about an hour's worth of improv and awkward silence.
There's such a great air of awkwardness throughout. Were you basing it off any real life experiences?
It’s definitely an exaggerated take on how I feel in most social situations, particularly ones where you don’t know the other person enough to be completely at ease around them, like work parties and double dates.
What projects are coming up for you in the future?
I’ve been very busy for the last two years developing and producing a 6-part comedy web series 'Godly’, collaborating yet again with Jack and a number of other emerging comedy creatives, which is currently in post-production and scheduled to release later this year.“Three Roman gods, revoked of their ancient titles, desperately attempt to regain their power and authority while wrestling with the challenges of the rapidly evolving contemporary scene.”We’re very keen to share this project with everyone, chuck us a follow on socials for any future updates. Definitely one for the Always Sunny/ Inbetweeners/ Roman mythology fans.
Any message to our Melbourne fans?
Melbourne scares me.
